Thalakkal Chandu was the kurichia leader who was strong support to Pazhassi Raja during the war aginst thr british company. When the pazhassi palace attacked by the british Pazhassi raja declared war against the company. He moved to the wayanadan jungles where raja had Thalakkal chandu's Kurichiyar were there ready with bow and arrow.
Pazhassi Raja planed several attack with Edachena Kunakan nair the army cheif of Pazhassi raja force.Kunkan and a group of tribal soldiers comprising 175 Kurichya archers, led by Thalakkal Chandu captured the British fort at Panamaram which was manned by the infantry units of Bombay.In the operation officer Captain Dickinson and Lt. Maxwell were killed in action along with 25 soldiers.They have collected several weapons and 6000rupees cash.
Through our own people and Pazhayam veedan chandu british had learned the hide out of Pazhassi Raja. In 1805 November 15 in a trap the british trupe captured Thalakkal Chandu and executed under a koly tree standing at the demolished fort of british at Panamaram. After 15 days on November 30 Pazhassi Raja also killed in the forest,a place called mavilamthode near pulpally.
Where the british fort stood now is the govt LP school of Panamaram in wayanad district.We can still see the koly tree standing just behind the school.The Geiant tree standing big with the memories of Thalakkal Chandu who given a tough time to the british.
In the movie Pazhassi Raja, manoj k Jayan performed as Thalakkal chandu and he received many appreaciations for the work he done in the movie.In fact after the movie released many start visiting Panamaram to see the historical place.
