Pazhassi raja, the king who made the powerful resistance against the British in the northern Malabar during 1750 - 1805 period.PazhassiRaja moved to the wayanadan jungles with the help of thalakkal chandu,the leader of kurichiar and Edachena Kunkan nair where he started the war.

In 1805 Pazhassiraja sarrounded by the british at the palce called Mavilamthode inside forest,5 kilometers away from pulpally. There was a heavy fighting and Pazhassiraja shot dead there. Still there is a memoroial at the death spot inside forest. See the photos of mavilamthode.

Very soon after Pazhassiraja killed British captured Thalakkal Chandu and killed under a koly tree. The tree still located at Panamaram government high school. The school located where the British fort stood during pazhassiraja period which destroyed by Thalakkal Chandu and Edachena kunkan. Edachena Kunkan later committed suicide before the british capture.

Malayalam movie pazhassi Raja released in 2009 rewrite the history of Malayalam movies,. Mammootty performed as pazhassi raja written by MT Vasudevan nair ,directed by Hariharan music by Ilayaraja.

Movie tells the story of kerala verma pazhassi raja who led the fight against British east India company. Pazhassi raja had dispute with British over the tax collections. Movie shows that British and Indian police attack pazhassi palace in Kannur and destroyed completely . Pazhassi raja and his wife Kaithery Makkom moved to wayanadan jungles and started the guerilla war with the help of kurichiar.

Tamil actor sharath Kumar in the movie appeared as Edachena Kunkan nair and Manoj k jayan as Thalakkal chandu, Many times this team of Raja defeated British and killing many of soldiers. With the help of Pazhayam Veedan Chandu (Suman) the British surrounded the jungle. They have killed Thalakkal Chandu at Panamaram under a Koly tree. (At government school Panamaram Panamaram we can still see the koly tree where planning to make a memorial of Thalakkal chandu) Edachena kunkan surrounded by the british but he committed suicide before the British capture him. This happened in Edavaka Panchayath in Wayanadu. The movie shows that the Raja killed by the British during the fight. The British collector Baber commented that “ Even if he was warrior he was a real warrior” and saluted. Malayalam actress Kaniha as Kaithery makkom and Tamil actress Padmapriya as Neeli fiancy of Thalakkal Chandu.

At Mananthavadi we can see the tomb of Pazhassi Raja as well as a museum operates.
