Malayalam actress Kavya Madhavan who started her acting career as s child artist in the Malayalam movie 'pookalam Varavai' directed by Kamal. Movie tells the story of kerala verma pazhassi raja who led the fight against British east India company. Pazhassi raja had dispute with British over the tax collections. Movie shows that British and Indian police attack pazhassi palace in Kannur and destroyed completely . Pazhassi raja and his wife Kaithery Makkom moved to wayanadan jungles and started the guerilla war with the help of kurichiar.
Tamil actor sharath Kumar in the movie appeared as Edachena Kunkan nair and Manoj k jayan as Thalakkal chandu, Many times this team of Raja defeated British and killing many of soldiers. With the help of Pazhayam Veedan Chandu (Suman) the British surrounded the jungle. They have killed Thalakkal Chandu at Panamaram under a Koly tree. (At government school Panamaram Panamaram we can still see the koly tree where planning to make a memorial of Thalakkal chandu) Edachena kunkan surrounded by the british but he committed suicide before the British capture him. This happened in Edavaka Panchayath in Wayanadu. The movie shows that the Raja killed by the British during the fight. The British collector Baber commented that “ Even if he was warrior he was a real warrior” and saluted. Malayalam actress Kaniha as Kaithery makkom and Tamil actress Padmapriya as Neeli fiancy of Thalakkal Chandu.
At Mananthavadi we can see the tomb of Pazhassi Raja as well as a museum operates. He fell in love with next house girl at his home town while he is on vacation from the farm. That girl is sofiya and Soloman wanted to marry her. Sofia was having problems with step father and he wanted to marry her some one else. He objects the relationship with mohanlal and threatens her. At the end the step father rape her so that soloman will not marry her. The movie ending with an unexpected climax when soloman accepts sofia and drove back his wine yard in his tanker lorry.
Mohnalal was superb as soloman in the movie. Malayalam actress Shari acted as Sofia also kaviyoor Ponnama, Thilakan and Vineeth are excellent in their roles. The both movies in telugu and malayalam are directed by Balu Mahendra who directed another masterpiece in Malayalam titled ‘Olangal’.
The story take place in 1975 – 1977 when nation wide emergency declared. Mammootty plays the role as Unnikrishnan , a forest officer who fall in love with a local girl Thulasi ( played by Malayalam actress Shobana ) and decide to marry her. Unnikrishnan got arrested by the police seeing the similarity of another criminal as Unnikrishnan. In the jail Unnikrishnan accidentally kill a police constable and he goes to jail. Unnikrishnan wrote Thulasi to forget him. After the jail term with little hope Unnikrishnan write to thulasi if she is still waiting for him light a lamp under the tree near road. At the end Unnikrishnan seeing that thousand of candle lit under the tree and Thulasi is waiting for him. Mammootty got the special jury award and film fare award for his acting in this movie.
